Ecommerce planning guide

Plan an ecommerce checkout before choosing the design

Checkout design can only be as clear as the business rules behind it. Decide how orders move through the business before polishing the payment screen.

Short answer

The useful numbers, with the conditions attached.

  • Map the order from basket to fulfilment, including exceptions.
  • Ask customers only for information the order process needs.
  • Test payment, confirmation and customer support as one connected journey.
01

Map the real order flow first

Before choosing checkout fields, write what happens after an order is placed: who sees it, how stock is confirmed, how delivery is arranged, when a customer is contacted and what marks the order complete. This identifies the information the business genuinely needs and the steps that cannot be promised automatically.

Include exceptions such as unavailable items, an address outside the service area, a failed payment or a customer request to amend an order. These are normal operating cases. Designing only the perfect path leaves staff improvising in the situations that create the most customer frustration.

  • Order notification owner
  • Stock confirmation
  • Delivery or collection workflow
  • Exception handling
  • Customer communication points
02

Collect only the information needed to fulfil

Every field adds effort and a responsibility to handle the information appropriately. Request the name, contact, address and instructions required for the chosen fulfilment method, then avoid collecting personal details because they might be useful later. Clear labels and examples reduce preventable mistakes.

Make guest checkout or account requirements an intentional business decision, not a platform default left unreviewed. Consider whether a returning customer benefits from an account and whether forcing registration will interrupt a simple purchase. Explain any required account step plainly.

  • Necessary contact details
  • Delivery or collection information
  • Clear optional versus required fields
  • Appropriate input validation
03

Choose payments around operations and customer confidence

Payment is a provider and business decision as well as a screen design decision. Confirm what payment methods the selected platform and provider can support for the business, how refunds are handled, who reconciles orders and what a customer sees if authorisation does not complete.

Do not imply that payment is complete until the underlying system confirms the appropriate state. The confirmation wording should be accurate about what happens next, especially where stock, delivery timing or manual review affects fulfilment.

  • Supported payment methods
  • Order and payment status wording
  • Refund process
  • Finance or operations owner
04

Rehearse checkout before public launch

Run test orders through the full journey using the available test process: add products, select delivery, complete payment, receive the confirmation and follow the order into the business workflow. Check both what the customer receives and what staff see.

Test on a phone and include an error route. A successful test order is not enough if an unavailable product, failed card or incorrect address produces a confusing message. Keep a launch checklist and repeat the test after significant payment, delivery or platform changes.

  • Successful order
  • Failed or cancelled payment
  • Unavailable-item route
  • Customer email or message
  • Staff notification and fulfilment record

Common questions

Questions worth settling before you commit.

Should I ask customers to create an account?

Only if it provides a clear benefit or is necessary for the service. A forced account can add friction to a straightforward purchase.

Can checkout be designed before payment is selected?

You can plan the information and flow, but the final behaviour must be tested against the payment and platform capabilities actually selected.

What should the confirmation page say?

Confirm the order state accurately, explain the next step and give a route for support. Do not promise fulfilment timing the business cannot yet confirm.
